July 19 2006 saw the Tesla Roadster officially unveiled to the public in California. Developed by Tesla Motors with attributes from Porsche and Mclaren. The final product does not disappoint. Featuring a sleek chassis design the two-door rear-mid-engine rear wheel drive roadster has a mean look about it – and performance to match. A quarter-mile time of 12.643 seconds would be respectable for many mid-range combustion engine vehicles, for an electric vehicle it is a record. The 0-60mph acceleration time for the 2010 sports model is 3.7 seconds ! Boasting a comparable efficiency of 2.0L/100km and able to travel 393km on a single charge of its litihium ion battery pack, this little number has more than enough under the hood to get you from A to B. The roadster is powered by a 3-phase 4-pole electric motor, delivering a maximum net power of 185kW (248hp). Maximum torque weighs in at 270Nm (200ft-lbf). This torque output is delivered at 0rpm and remains almost constant all the way up to 6000rpm. The battery pack or ESS (as Tesla Motors refers to it: the Energy Storage System) contains 6831 lithium ion cells arranged into 11 sheets, connected in series. Without getting too technical, this means that a full recharge of the battery system requires 3.5 hours. By late 2009, Tesla has delivered approximately 700 cars to customers, the vast majority being in the United States, at a base price of US $109,000. European deliveries are expected to increase through 2010.

You are looking at the Future of Electric Car Racing ! The Edison Race Concept is astounding to say the least. Powered by a Pure EV Electric Platform featuring space age composites and lithium ion battery technology, this car is out of this world ! On paper specifications rate the traction motor at 1000Nm of Torque delivered through all 4 wheels with 0-60mph time of 2.3seconds and a standing 1/4 mile time of 7.8sec !! This eclipses any petrol powered race vehicle to date !
Now all this is a concept and at this stage purely fictional, but it is an indication of what is to come from the future of Electric Vehicles. Imagine a Race Car that could accelerate as fast as an RC Electric Car, or Scalextric Electric Model Car. This is what this car is looking to be capable of. Zero Emissions, less noise and greater efficiency, Electric Engines can do all of what petrol engines can, but in a much smarter, more advanced and enviromentally friendly manner.
